PETER STILES

Contemporary painter, Peter Stiles lives and works in North Devon. Since 1980 he has depicted the dramatic scenerie of these coastal landscapes and geometery through colourful oil paintings. Having studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, Peter has made Hartland and Welcombe a focal point of his dedicated practice.

Painting in the landscape, through every season, Peter knows the cliffs and rock formations intimately. Rather than making an accuate recording, his paintings store memories and sensations from years of ‘looking’ that allow him to dance between abstraction and landscape.

Throughout his career, Peter has curated and faciliated exhibitions. His own work has been shown widely, including shows in London, Exeter, Bristol and Glasgow.  He is currently Co-Director StudioKIND, Barnstable and previously Gallery Director, The Plough Arts Centre, Torrington and spent eight years working for The Arts Council. He is a keen writer and formed the Art Writers Group with Jo Lanyon and Grace Davies.
