Lisa Wright

“I use light and shadow to create drama in my work. These help ground the figure but at the same time the ephemeral nature speaks to the presence of the ‘other’ ;- a less tangible part of the lived human experience”

Lisa Wright's paintings are instantly recognisable for their balance between the figurative and abstract, sensual use of material and their vibrant colour. Throughout her work luminosity and the drama of light lends different emotional qualities to the subject matter.

Within the series Shadow Stories, presented here, the figure is placed centrally but only as a shadow cast in nature’s own field. Wright refrains from the specifics of individual traits and without the tangible aspects of portrait we are left with an ‘essence’ on to which we imprint our own thoughts and feelings.
